Facial Pigmentation affects many individuals, whether it be a small sunspot or a large area such as Melasma. This can be distressing and possibly the first thing you notice when you look in the mirror.

At Norwich Face and Body Clinic, we have the exclusive Q10 Q-switch laser. This is a Medical grade, CE, and FDA approved laser.

This laser effectively treats various skin conditions such as Age spots, Sunspots, Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, and Seborrheic Keratosis. we also successfully treat other forms of Pigmentation, such as Melasma, but these are treated with Obagi Nu-derm, a medical-grade skincare range.

The most common concerns we treat are sunspots.

About Sunspots

What are sunspots?

Sunspots, medically known as solar lentigines, are flat pale brown spots that can appear on the skin wherever there has been long term sun exposure.

Sunspots tend to range from freckle size to half an inch or so, and there may be many in one area. Sunspots are also sometimes known as liver spots because of their colour; not because they have anything to do with the liver.

What causes sunspots?

Cumulative exposure to ultraviolet light causes sunspots that look like splotches of darker skin.

They are part of photo-ageing or skin damage caused by the sun. The skin naturally becomes thinner and loses elasticity with age, and any hyper-pigmentation can accentuate the aged appearance.

How do sunspots differ from a tan?

As part of natural sun protection, the epidermis or top layer of the skin thickens in response to ultraviolet light and produces melanin or a tan. This melanin tends to clump with repeated sun damage and not distribute evenly.

A tan will fade away from the sun after a few days, whereas sunspots become permanent marks on the skin.

The more sun an area of the skin receives, the more vulnerable it is to sunspots, sun damage and skin cancer.

How it works

Norwich Laser Pigmentation Removal works by targeting the Pigmentation within the skin. The laser penetrates through the skin down to the pigment and breaks it into particles. Once the Pigmentation has been broken down, the immune system recognises it as waste and works hard to flush the particles out of the body.

At each visit, the pigment is broken down further into smaller particles until the area of Pigmentation is minimally visible, if at all.

The process can take 1-3 treatments.

What to expect at your sunspot removal appointment

Before going ahead with the laser pigmentation removal, we require you to come in for a consultation and patch test. This will allow us to view the area of concern, discuss lifestyle, habits, and expectations of the treatment. Also, we will check your skin’s sensitivity by applying the laser to your neck area. An individual treatment plan will be created and discussed in full detail, along with the pre and post-care.

Images will be taken for our records to allow us to track your progress.

During the patch test and actual treatment, you will lie conformably on the treatment couch with the area of concern exposed and cleaned. You and our laser specialist will apply a pair of protective googles each. The laser specialist will then start the treatment using the specific hand piece and laser setting; without touching the area, the laser beam will paint over the areas of pigmentation. You will feel a warm tingling sensation, but this will pass quickly.

Common side effects of laser pigmentation removal include:

If you experience any of these effects, rest assured they are common. Although these side effects may be mildly uncomfortable, they positively signal your skin’s adaptability and its ability to respond to the treatment correctly.

It is important to note directly following on from the procedure, the treated skin will turn a white ‘frost’ colour, and in most cases, this will only last a few minutes.

What else to expect in the first few days

Your treated skin may be slightly tender the first few days after receiving your Norwich Laser Pigmentation Removal procedure with our skin and laser specialists.

After the Laser Pigmentation Removal treatment, is it essential to avoid hot showers, baths or soaking your skin for 24 hours. When you do shower, try to keep the treated skin out of the direct stream of water.

The area might be slightly inflamed, dry and/or red in colour. Once the treatment area scabs over, avoid unnecessary contact. These scabs commonly fall off between 10 and 14 days after your treatment.

Avoid sun exposure during the entire course of treatment.

It is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle during treatment to ensure that the immune system has the best possible chance to remove these waste particles. The speed at which the pigment is removed will depend significantly on this.

OTHER TYPES OF PIGMENTATION

Another common type of pigmentation we see on a daily basis is Melasma or Chloasma; this is a type of pigmentation that is deeper in the skin’s dermis. It appears on the face as patches of pigment and is usually found on the cheeks, temples, upper lip, and forehead but can also be found on the body.

Melasma is generally the most challenging type of pigmentation to remove, but we are ambassadors of Obagi, an outstanding medical skincare range. Obagi has created the most effective medical skincare range called Nu-derm, which treats Melasma and other types of widespread pigment fabulously. The results speak for themselves!
